Anish Kumar

Vice Chancellor for Real Estate

As the inaugural Vice Chancellor for Real Estate, Anish Kumar established the University's Office of Real Estate as a financially self-sustaining responsibility center. The Office implements the University's real estate strategy to meet space needs, support community and economic development, activate campus edges, and generate commercial revenue.

Kumar holds delegated signature authority to negotiate, execute, and administer University real estate agreements on behalf of the Board of Trustees — including leases, acquisitions, dispositions, easements, and public-private partnerships. He also directs management of the University's commercial asset portfolio, applying developer-level discipline through building-level financial accountability, leasing, and asset management. The Office also synthesizes the academic, economic, physical, social, and civic implications of University real estate decisions, secures CFO and Board approval for transactions above delegated thresholds, and reports regularly on portfolio performance and risk.

Prior to Pitt, Kumar led Amtrak's real estate department, directing an 18-person team responsible for all real estate activity supporting the railroad's nationwide operations. He then served as the inaugural Managing Director of the University of Pennsylvania's Pennovation Works, a 23-acre mixed-use innovation district, where he set strategic direction and oversaw real estate development, leasing, programming, and operations.

Kumar is a licensed architect and planner. He holds a bachelor's degree in architecture from CEPT University in Ahmedabad, India, and a master's degree in architecture with a certificate in urban design from the University of Pennsylvania.
